BIMI
What is BIMI?
BIMI stands for Brand Indicators for Message Identification. This is a way of identifying the sender of an email. Not only visually: the recipient sees the brand logo appear; but also technically: the mail server refers to the settings of the sending domain and the DMARC policy.
Why can BIMI improve your emailings?
As mentioned, the BIMI protocol is a guarantee of trust. Its use ensures
that the email sent is authenticated and really comes from the brand.
Setting up authentication methods on
your sending servers is a way of combating phishing (identity theft) and spam.
You create awareness and a climate of trust around your brand and your sending
domains, which will only be beneficial for the deliverability of your email
marketing
campaigns and their results.
How does the BIMI standard work?
BIMI is a TXT record to be made in the DNS entries of your domain name. For the standard to be usable, it needs to be coupled with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, three complementary protocols for authenticating the sender of these messages. The aim of all these records is to ensure that "you are you".
The keys to configuring BIMI
3 conditions must be met:
- Couple BIMI with other authentication protocols such as DKIM, SPF and DMARC.
- Control the DNS for your domain name so that you can set the parameters for the registrations.
- Create an SVG file that complies with current standards.
Note: some email clients do not support the BIMI specification.
In your administration interface
BIMI compliance indicator :
On the home page of your admin console, you will find a real-time indicator of the domain's DNS information.
Here are a number of checklists:
There is a TXT record for the domain
No TXT record for the domain
How to create an SVG for use with BIMI
TXT registration for BIMI requires your logo to be in a very specific SVG format: SVG Tiny P/S.
First of all, you need to work in vector format in order to create an SVG
file. The idea is for your logo (or part of a logo) to be a vector in a square.
No size is specified, so it can be displayed in small or large format.
Minimum recording format required: SVG 1.2 + manual actions to obtain a Tiny
P/S
version.
Next, you'll need to open your SVG file with a Notepad-type editor to modify certain attributes:
- Modify/check the SVG version: you need version="1.2" baseProfile="tiny-ps".
- Delete size attributes (x and y)
- Add a tag , do not leave this tag empty
To complete the picture, CSS styles are not tolerated, and your element must be centred to display properly in square or round format.
Which DNS record for BIMI?
Here is an example of a TXT record for the BIMI standard:
default._bimi.yourdomain IN TXT "v=BIMI1; l="URL in https where your
SVG is hosted"
